“You aren’t?” Faith said, stopping her in her tracks.

“No. Hence my problem and dilemma and why I’m calling you.”

“Why don’t you start from the beginning and tell me everything?”

Taking a deep breath, I told her all about meeting Bash for drinks and him thinking we were still together, or how we should be, ending with Mac coming in and helping me.

“He really stepped in like that? How magnanimous of him.”

“I’m not sure that’s the word I would use.”

“What would you use?”

“Overstepping, interfering, causing more problems, as you can see from the picture.”

“Do you want my advice as your sister or as a public relations specialist?”

“Both, but I’ll take the PR perspective first.”

“The picture, if not a true depiction of your and Mac’s relationship, can easily be explained away. However, denying that you have a relationship will only convince people that you actually do.”

“Great. So, it’s a “we're damned if we do, we’re damned if we don’t,” sort of thing?” I asked.

“Not necessarily. There are ways to handle this. We could work on releasing a joint statement, you could both do one separately that says the same thing, you could have his company make a statement and leave you out of it, you could just ignore it and hope that it will go away.”

“I like the last option. Can we do that?”

“If that’s what you want to do then I’ll support you. Understand, things like this, especially something as juicy as this, aren’t going to just go away on their own. There’s already speculation that you specifically had drinks at The East so you would be seen. People are going to have questions and they won’t quit until they have them, or they make up them on their own.”

“Lovely. So, playing ostrich is out?”

“If an ostrich was to put its head in the sand it would suffocate.”

“Thank you for the random bit of knowledge. What do you suggest I do?”

“What do you want to do?”

“Make it all go away. Pretend it never happened. Go back to researching my book and be done with all of this.”

“Do you really?”

“Yes.”

“Now, I’m going to move to being your sister for a moment. Why the hell would you do something stupid like that? You have a man, a very sexy man who seems quite interested in you. One who could be a potential date even may I say lover and you want to pretend like it isn’t happening? Have you lost your mind?”

“He isn’t into me that way. He only came over to help me out.”

“Was that all he was doing? Are you sure? Or do you think he might have been looking for something more?”

“Mac and I have known each other for years. He was my mentor when I started school for crying out loud. He has always seen me as a little sister, someone he needs to protect and keep an eye on. I’m about the same age as Bailey and I’m sure that’s all he has ever seen me or will see me as, a little sister.”

“No brother looks at his sister the way he’s looking at you in that picture.”

“Faith.”

“Hope. The man’s into you and it’s plain to see. He isn’t posing, he isn’t showing off for the camera. He isn’t JD, nor does he seem like a guy who would do that. He’s showing a genuine feeling towards a woman he’s having a drink with, and that woman happens to be you. Why can’t you accept that?”

“It seems too far-fetched. He’s older than me. He’s established in his career, in who he is, he wouldn't want to get involved with someone like me.”
