“Do you think he would do that? From what you’re saying about the night and the pictures I’m looking at, this is a man who’s very much into you.”
“The picture was for show. He even commented about how well I played it when we got into the car. He did the same thing. You can’t go by that picture at all.”
“I get that pictures only show you so much, but the camera also doesn’t lie. From what I’m seeing, that man is into you.”
“But not enough to kiss me at the end of the night.”
“You didn’t kiss him either, maybe he was waiting for you to make the move,” Faith offered.
“No. It wasn’t that. He knows I would never make the first move and he’s too much of a gentleman to want me to.”
“See, you know him so well already. Now, you just need to have another date with him and get that kiss you’re so desperate for,” Faith teased.
“I’m not desperate for a kiss!”
Faith didn’t say anything and her silence spoke volumes.
“Okay, so maybe I might want the man to kiss me. I might have thought about what it would be like when we did, a lot. That doesn’t mean I’m desperate for it, just that I wouldn’t mind it if it happened.”
“And you’re disappointed that it didn’t,” she added.
“Yes. A little. It’s all so confusing with us dating but not, us being together but only for show. I was glad to help out, I wanted to help out, but I’m not sure if I can do this anymore. I’m not sure if I want to.”
“Even if it meant that you could get that kiss that you want?”
“There’s no guarantee that I would. You’re trying to make me feel better by saying he likes me, but even I’m not sure and I was with him all last night.”
“You had a nice enough time that you thought he would kiss you at the end. Isn’t that a sign that he likes you, he wants to be with you, and he wants to kiss you?”
“Or it just means he’s very good at keeping up pretenses.”
“What was your first instinct about the night? About him?” Faith asked.
I didn’t answer her right away as I thought back to how Mac had been talking to Matt about his family and teasing Liam about going back to Ireland and how Mac wanted to go with him. It was relaxed and easy sitting at the bar with him and yes, there were times he had looked at me and I had felt an attraction.
“He was into me,” I said softly.
“What was that? I didn’t hear you. Did you just say I was right?”
I laughed. “That was definitely not what I said, but just about. I think he likes me. Dang, that sounds so childish. We aren’t in high school. It isn’t like I’m hoping he’s going to ask me to the school dance.”
“No, but you do like him, and those feelings are the same whether you’re in high school or getting a PhD. It isn’t easy. Believe me, I know. I didn’t believe that Cole was interested in me, even when he and his feelings were staring me straight in my face.”
“Yeah, you were kind of clueless when it came to Cole, but that was different. You two had a history together. You had known each other for years, it was almost inevitable that you two ended up together, or at least I thought so.”
“Just like I can see the same thing with you and Mac. Don’t dismiss him or your feelings towards him so easily. I know it’s been an intense couple of days. There’s been a lot going on and a lot to take in. It’s all good things, at least I think it will be.”
“We’ll see if he ever calls me again,” I muttered.
“You know he’s going to. Mac isn’t a man who would leave you high and dry. If nothing else he’s going to call you and tell you that you’ve done your job and when he does, you can see if he wants to see you again. I imagine he’s just as confused about everything as you are.”
“He didn’t seem that way but that doesn’t mean he isn’t. He’s good at keeping things close to the chest, until he isn’t,” I said.
“I want to ask you what you mean by that, but I have a feeling I shouldn’t. Talk to him, see where his head is. You did that last time and you got a date with him. An incredible date, one of the best dates you’ve ever been on. You could have that again, just talk to him.”
“You’re right. You’re right,” I said with a sigh.
“Good to see you’re finally seeing things my way. When are you going to talk to him?”
