I was just worried that we had done too good of a job and now that he and I were more popular than JD and Lizbeth, he wouldn’t need to go out with me anymore. We could quietly stop going out and then everything would go back to how it was for us and the way it should be for JD. As I saw the screen on my phone telling me Mac was calling, I had a feeling that was what he would tell me.

There was a small part of me that didn’t want to answer the phone. I liked living with the belief that we had a wonderful date and we were going to have another one. I was worried that if I answered the phone he would tell me we were over. Though the not knowing, the worrying, the constant scenarios that ran through my mind had to be worse than the conversation. At least I thought it was, but I was wrong.

“Hey you,” Mac said.

I felt a slight thrill go through my body with the way he said, “you.” It was soft, almost breathless and very sexy. I sat down on my couch, looked out my window, and smiled into the phone. There wasn’t much to see but the afternoon sun made the building across the way look beautiful.

“How are you doing? Surviving the day?” I asked.

“Yes. A little tired but totally worth it. I had a really nice time last night,” he said.

I clutched the phone tighter in my hand as I said, “I did too. It was a lot of fun.”

“You impressed Matt and Liam. They were asking me a lot of questions about you today. You’ll have to stop by again and see them.”

I felt a slight bit of dread that Mac wasn’t offering to take me. We had mentioned going back for quiz night when we could do all the rounds, but maybe he had just said that to keep things simple.

“That sounds like a wonderful idea. I would love to see them again.”

“They would like that. Have you, uh, been on social media at all today?”

“Should I have been? Did something happen?”

Mac laughed. “Nothing overly exciting. I think there might be a new movie opening up that people are talking about, but that’s about it.”

“Oh, good. And here I was worried that you and I were trending. I would hate to think that we had gotten the most ridiculous nickname of Mope.”

“Right? JD liked the name. I think it’s ridiculous, I’m glad you agree.”

“It’s not my favorite, though it’s better than Mace. Could you imagine?”

Mac laughed. “That might be better. Maybe we can get that one to trend.”

“I’m sure us trending with one name is more than enough. There’s no need to start a war between them.”

“True, though it would be fun to watch.”

“No. It wouldn’t,” I stated.

“You have a point. I have to say, when you set out to do something, you do it well. I had no idea that going out once would have such an impact. No one is thinking about much less talking about JD and Lizbeth.”

“Good. It was what we wanted, right? That was why we did this?”

“Yes. I can’t thank you enough for all that you’ve done for me and my family. Words can’t express how much it means to me, to them. You really went above and beyond, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.”

“I was just glad to help. I mean going to see a play that I really wanted to see and having one of the best burgers I’ve ever had was a bit of a hardship, but I was willing to do it for you,” I teased.

Mac laughed. “The best burger, huh? I’ll have to tell Smitty, the chef. He’ll love the praise.”

“Smitty? The chef’s name is Smitty?”

“He’s a huge fan of Smithwick’s and the nickname came about because of it. I honestly don’t know his real name.”

“I love it. They all seem like good people.”

“They are, and so are you. Though you keep distracting me from the reason I called.”

“And what reason is that?”
