I shake my head. “I did a walk-through because of the window. I wanted to see if there was any other damage or if anything had been taken, but everything looked fine until I came in here and found Hank.”

The cop gestures to Hank’s desk. “Is it always like that?”

I huff out a laugh. “Pretty much. Although it seems worse than usual,” I admit, seeing the ashtray Hank was talking about on the floor broken in two pieces.

I frown and step toward it.

“What is it?”

I look back at the cop and smooth out my features. “I thought I saw something, but it’s just crap that fell off his desk.”

“Hey.” I turn to the paramedic when he speaks.

“I’m going to get the gurney. His vitals are good, and he’s awake and responsive, but I want to take him in and get him checked by a doctor.”

“Okay. Which hospital?”

“HRD General.”

I nod as he heads out to the ambulance.

“I’ll have more questions, but they can wait for now. I’ll call the forensic team to assess the scene and collect any evidence. You have a number I can reach you on?”

“Yeah, it’s—”

“Just call me, Frank. We’re always together anyway,” Law tells him, walking through the door. He heads straight for me and presses a kiss to my forehead before moving over to Hank.

“For once, that hard head of yours came in handy, huh?” he teases him.

“You two know each other?” Frank looks between me and Law.

“He works here.”

“And I’m her man,” Law throws in, making me roll my eyes.

“And he’s my man.”

Frank’s lips twitch, but he doesn’t comment further. “Alright, well, I’ll call the tech team now. Call me if you think of anything that might shine some light on what happened.” He hands me his card with his number on the back.

“I will, thanks.”

He makes his way to the door, stepping aside for the paramedic, who has his partner and the gurney with him. I stay out of the way while they load Hank onto it, only stepping forward when he calls me.

“You want to grab the keys, make sure they didn’t take anything while I was knocked out?”

“You dirty old man. You just want me to fondle you,” I tease, slipping my hand into the front pocket of his jeans and pulling the keys out.

“Now I’m wishing they hit me harder,” he complains, making Law chuckle as he stands behind me with his hand on my shoulder.

“I’ll meet you there.”

“No hurry, Mal. I won’t be doing anything but napping.” He grins before they wheel him out.

Once the room is empty of everyone but me and Law, I release the breath I was holding. Law turns me into his arms and pulls me tightly against his chest. I fight hard to keep the tears at bay and manage to. Just.

“You okay?”

“For a minute there, I thought I’d lost him.”
