“Yeah, I realize that,” I say, walking to stand beside him.

Mila’s eyes open wide. There’s a gun in the back of my pants, but I have nothing in my hands.

“I think it’s time we make sure that she dies once and for all this time. No mistakes,” The Enforcer says.

“I agree. But I’ll be the one to put the bullet between her eyes,” I say, reaching for his gun.

“No, Boss. She’s your weak spot. Let me do it.”

“Hand me your gun, Bruno,” I say, calling him by his real name.

“But Boss, she will only talk you out of it. She’s good, this one, a regular snake,” he seethes.

“Abbastanza!” I say, still holding my hand out for his gun.

He places it in my hand, his eyes going from me to her.

“Bruno is right, Mila. Trust is the most important thing to a man like me. There aren’t many in my circle that I can trust. And when I let you in, and you turn your back on me…well, there’s a punishment for that.”

I walk closer to Mila with my gun trained on her. “It doesn’t matter that you tell me that I can trust you again or you were doing a certain deed to protect me. Can I ever really trust you again? Can I trust you when I expect you to be there to have my back, and you’re nowhere to be found?”

I take the gun, press it against Mila’s temple, and slowly trace it down the sides of her face. Her breath hitches in her throat, and her eyes narrow.

“Put your gun on the floor, Amante.”

She does what I tell her to and slowly stands back up. There is no fear in her eyes.

“There are some things that one can’t go back from. And the ultimate punishment is death. Betrayal is one of those. It was good while it lasted, was it not, Amante?”

She nods slowly, and I kiss the corners of her mouth before moving to stand behind her. Wrapping my arms around her, I grab her hands and place Bruno’s gun into her hands.

“Do what you gotta do, Bella,” I say.

Slowly, I remove my hands from hers and drop them to her waist. She pulls her hands up, and we both stare at The Enforcer.

“The fuck, Boss!” he shouts, pissing on himself.

“You fucking betrayed me. Told Colombo not only that Mila was here but that my fucking daughter was hers? You gave the motherfucker the blueprint to my house! And for what? Access to his fucking psychopathic wife who likes to beat your ass during sex?”

That was another thing that I’d uncovered. The Enforcer had a strange addiction to being beaten during sex, something that Colombo’s wife enjoyed dishing out. He’d been creeping with the man’s wife when we lived in America. At some point, Colombo found out, but rather than killing him, I’d also learned that he had a fetish for watching his wife with other men.

“A couple of million dollars.”

“Too bad you won’t get to spend a dime,” I say. “Do what you gotta do, baby,” I repeat.

Without hesitation, Mila puts a bullet right between The Enforcer’s eyes.

Walking to where he lies, I check his pulse and find none.

“Good job,” I tell her.

Mila rushes to me, holding me and kissing my face. Laughing, I say, “I love you, too, girl. But we’ve got some work to do.”

“Wait. I kill a man, and you tell me that you love me?” she asks in disbelief with a surprised grin.

“Hell, yeah. Now let’s go,” I say, grabbing her hand and leading her from the basement.

I call my clean-up crew, and my father is at the house by the time they finish.
