I blushed. “It’s easy to say that now. But back then, our nerdy, introverted selves would’ve gotten in the way. We needed to mature a bit, experience other things, relationship disappointments, and real-life ups and downs. As much as I wish we would’ve gotten together back then, I’m glad it’s happening now.”

“I am, too,” he said. “We’re both ready.”

I was so ready.

“Have you spoken to your parents recently?” I asked.

“Um, not…not super lately.” He scratched the back of his neck. I’d noticed it was one of his tells. “I think I spoke to them sometime last week.”

“Have they shared any more about how they feel about the breakup?” Marco had told his parents after Yasmine had returned from California that they were no longer engaged. He’d been very scarce on the details with me, which was a little odd. He’d said only that they’d supported his decision and needed a little more time to process the news.

“They’re doing the same,” he assured me. “They’re sad, but they’ll get through it.”

“If they’re still having a hard time, maybe Yasmine could speak to them? I know they were close to her and likely miss her. Knowing that the breakup was mutual and that she’s doing okay could help.”

“Possibly,” he said. “I’ll mention it to her.” He made another turn, and I saw Elliott Bay laid out before us. “We’re here.”
