“Aiden.”

I was seated on one of the stools of the marble kitchen island, as the house didn’t have any furniture except the kitchen stools. He had mentioned that he would get an interior designer to get his place furnished unless I wanted to help him without any distractions. I agreed. We were not a couple who could buy cutesy bedsheets together without thinking about stripping and having sex.

When he looked at me, he closed the fridge. He must have known I was serious just by seeing my expression. He walked towards me and asked, “What happened?”

I looked at my hands and took a deep breath. “I wanted to ask about Addison. Is everything okay?”

I had known from brother that Aiden had broken up with his fiancée a month ago. They had been together since they were in high-school although they had broken up and got together several times.

Aiden sat beside me on the stool and his face was soft when he said, “Yes, everything’s okay. She’s pregnant, and she came to tell me goodbye.”

“Oh.”

There was a moment of awkward silence between us.

“I found her with her boss in our bed. I… I left and didn’t see her again until tomorrow.”

“Aiden.” I held his hand and peered at his face. “I didn’t know she cheated on you. Were you angry at her? When you saw her yesterday?”

His thumb rubbed over the back of my hand, making soothing patterns on my skin. “I was angry at first, but then we talked. I got my closure.”

I smiled at him and kissed his knuckle. I frowned when his eyes turned cold as he said, “But if I see your ex-boyfriend, I will punch him. Sleeping with your friend who’s your roommate no less is pure assholery. Your brother wanted to call his old friends and have the poor kid abducted and threaten him, but I vouched for a punch.”

I let out a soft chuckle, shaking my head. “I’m glad you vouched for a punch, but you don’t have to do anything. It hurt a lot seeing him with Amanda, but in a way, I was relieved.” I continued when he tilted his head to hear more, “We started dating because he sat beside me during Business Accounting and talked to me, wanting to know if I would be at his birthday party. Next thing I know, we are hooking up and he wanted to be together. But he never truly cared or showed any interests in my hobbies or… me. He called me when he wanted to—” I sighed and squeezed Aiden’s hand, “I am glad it’s over. I’m glad I came back to San Diego, and you opened the door.”

“Me too, Petal.” He pulled me closer, cupping my cheek and leaning in for the kiss.

But his doorbell rang, making both of us jump. I looked at him in confusion and followed him to the hallway when he opened the main door.
