By the time Owen gets to the front, I’ve only been in once more and I hope he’s got his throwing arm ready.

“How’s it going, Bentley?” he asks with a laugh.

I rock back and forth on the board. “Oh, you know. Just grand.”

He smirks. “Uh huh.”

Owen throws the ball and misses. Disappointment has never filled me so fast.

Though, he’s too prideful to walk away and I’m in the water on the next throw. I purposely dunk my head and my shoulders shake. Fuck, I better not be in here all day.

* * *

Thankfully,that isn’t the case. After dozens of kids send me into the water and I feel like a prune, I’m finally relieved of dunk tank duty. Even better, Kenzie convinced my assistant Brad to bring me the spare set of clothes I keep at the office for nights I’m running late to anything that I don’t want to wear a suit to.

He hands me the bag once I’ve dried off as best I can with a towel, and he says, “It’s good to see you so relaxed. I’m not used to it.”

He’s not supposed to be, but I don’t tell him that. Not when he’s just done me a huge favor. “Thanks for doing this. Are you going to stick around?”

Brad glances back at the row of cat crates. “Yeah, I think I just might.”

Interesting. I didn’t peg him for a cat person, but I at least know he’ll be able to afford taking care of one of them.

I glance back at the poor sucker who took my place. I think Kenzie called him Glen, and she seems all too pleased that he’s next up.

At least we’re both happier being done with the dunk tank.

Though, as Joyce heads for us, I’m not sure whatever comes next will be any better.
