I nod and get up almost robotically. Everything in me feels dead until I picture Selene’s smug face, then I’m back to murderous and the rapidly changing emotions are taking everything out of me.
When I find Ella and Piper, they’re already wrapping up and laughing as they pick rings from the barrels. That is only until they see me.
Ella tenses, clinging to a ring between her hands. “What happened?”
“I don’t even know. Too much to explain here, but Bentley left and I’m not okay.” I barely get the words out before new tears fall.
I’ve never been the kind of woman to cry over a man. Yet, there I was, with nothing snarky to say and feeling lower than I have in years.
Piper reaches me first and wraps her arms around me. “Whatever happened, I’m sure it can be fixed.”
I snort. “Only if he’ll listen to me.”
Ella joins. “We’ll tie him to a chair if we have to.”
I let them hold me for a few minutes before I straighten. “I won’t beg him. He’ll either listen, or he won’t. If he cares about me, then I shouldn’t have to plead for time to explain.”
Ella brushes hair out of my face. “While that’s true, love makes people do crazy things when they’re hurt. Whatever happened, it might not be allowing Bentley to act rationally and you’re going to have to bend a little, too, even if you don’t think you did anything wrong.”
She’s right and I know it, but the more time that passes, the less okay I am with how Bentley stormed off. Yes, I said something hurtful, but he didn’t have to be a child about it. He should have let me explain instead of telling me to go fuck myself.
I run a hand through my hair. “Damn it, this is stupid.”
Piper leans closer to me. “Nothing good in life comes easy. We’ve all learned that a time or two, don’t you agree?”
I pout and lean harder against her. “I don’t want to agree.”
She smiles. “Nobody ever does when it’s their turn to fight for what they want. Come on. Tell us what happened, and we’ll help fix it.”
Fuck, I hope they can.
