Now he was blushing. Actually blushing and there was no-one to see him. He bit down on his lower lip.

Aaron:Stop fishing. What r u doing?

Alice:Reading

He thought she wasn’t going to elaborate, then he saw three blinking dots.

Alice:Georgette Heyer.

—More dots. He waited.

Alice:Regency romance.

He grinned. Typical Al. Off in nineteenth-century lala land. He sent a yawning face emoji. His fingers itched as they hovered over the keys.

Aaron:We’ve got a dinner invite Saturday night r u free? Colleague from work.

A long, long pause. Now he felt itchy all over. He got up and started to pace the room.

Alice:Ok. What time?

Aaron:Not sure. Let you know.

He wanted to keep texting. Worse, he badly wanted to call and hear her voice. He forced his fingers to type the words “Night, sleep tight”. Before he knew it he’d added a kiss-blowing emoji. He grimaced. They had an unspoken code when it came to emojis. Nothing even vaguely romantic. No hearts. No kisses. All others were game. Frogs, monkeys, cats, though eggplants were only ever in relation to someone behaving like a dick. Never, ever sexual.

Exasperated at himself, he was about to turn off his phone when back pinged a kiss-blowing emoji, followed byzzzz.

His fingers crept to the corner of his mouth, remembering how soft her lips had felt. He whipped his hand away, flicked the phone to airplane mode, threw it on the coffee table and grabbed the TV controller.

A good dose of visual Valium. That’s what he needed right now.
