Did she still think, in some deep dark corner of her soul, that she was sub-par, because of her pain, her scar, her inability to get pregnant? Was she afraid she wasn’t good enough for someone so shiny and beautiful as Oliver?

With a huff she picked up her bowl and limped to the sink. It felt like Scarlet was joining in the fray, sending electric shocks up and down her thigh. “He wants children and I can’t deliver. And he lives on the other side of the world. It’s not like he’s up the road in Finsbury Park and we can work this through on a daily basis. Besides, by telling him it looks like I’m assuming… we have a future or something… Oh, bollocking hell… I don’t know.”

“Don’t you?” Evie’s eyebrows arched.

“No. I—oh, no, it’s too sodding messy.”

“And since when have you ever worried about mess?” Evie grinned.

Felicity got up abruptly and, as if to prove she’d turned over a new leaf, gathered up their bowls and took them to the sink too. “From now on I want my life to be nice and predictable,” she said.

“No you don’t. Remember how excited you were to go on this adventure.”

“Yes, minus the love bit. I didn’t mean to fall in love.”

Evie crowed. “So you are.”

“I—no—I—”

“We guessed as much.” Felix and Evie exchanged smug glances, then Evie launched in. “You know the pact we made after we all finished treatment, that we’d always be honest, never bottle stuff up, hide it, stuff it into dark corners and hope it would go away? Because it never does, it just festers under your skin, gnawing away, until it eats you up. We know that, hon, we’ve all been there.”

“You’re beating about the bush,’ Felicity grumbled.

“What I’m saying is, you need to face your fear. That you might not be good enough, that if you tell him you love him, he could reject you. Fuck that. Be brave. Tell him the truth.”

Felicity huffed and looked at Felix. “Man view?”

“I agree with Evie. Tell him.”

“Phttt. I hate you both. I’ll think about it when I don’t have jet lag.”

With that, she limped off down the corridor to bury herself under the duvet, with Digby, who didn’t demand anything of her other than her bed to sleep on.
