She gave an answering snorty giggle. “No guarantees about the company though, right?”

“You read my mind.” But it was said with a softness, a caress in his voice. Which made her cheeks even hotter—so hot in fact that she wanted to rub her face against the pad of his shoulder. Curl her fingers around his forearm and raise her lips and trail them around his neck, just where the raven hair swept close to his ear.

The kangaroo incident had presented a whole set of new problems; had made him so much morefallible,morereal,and somehow even more touchable.

She caught her lower lip between her teeth and bit the flesh as if the sharpness of that would control the urge… stop her doing something really, really stupid.

Because he wasn’t hers to touch. And even if there was definitely now a flirtatious energy replacing the tense one of half an hour ago, if she did try to kiss him, that would phenomenally mess up everything.

She twisted away, ducked around him, and moved towards the rickety table with the kettle on it.
