“I know,” I say with a pout as I glance down and circle his nipple with the tip of my finger. “But I want the old ones.”

He cups my cheek and lifts my face to his, kissing my lips with a gentleness I wasn’t aware he was capable of. “Then marry me.”

“What?”

“Marry me again. We’ll do it over. It can’t be as big as you deserve, but it will be special. You’ll wear a white dress, there will be a band, dancing, food—the works. And this time, we’ll do it legally, with witnesses and all.”

Unable to contain it, I grin back at him, my eyes pricking with the beginnings of tears. “Really?”

“Really. Besides, I don’t want you to think that just because you don’t remember it, you aren’t bound to me.” His smile completely fades now, and something darker, something terrifying and exciting fills his gaze. “I want your vow that you belong to me emblazoned in your brain. I want you to remember that you made it before God himself. I want it to be unbreakable.”

“I do belong to you,” I whisper.

“No matter what,” he says, his tone urging me to repeat the words.

“No matter what.”
