No one knew what happened after death. For those with Pure souls, reincarnation was a possibility. Other souls simply disappeared from the universe to make way for new souls.

Ere had a Pure soul; he was reincarnated twice already, the second time revived in his own body, that of Erebu, son of Tal-Telal and Ishtar Anshar.

But Sorin was born with a Dark One base. He was also an animal spirit, and arguably he’d survived death twice. His form was different the second time around when he was “reborn” as the phoenix versus his original eagle spirit form.

He didn’t know the whys of it. He couldn’t be sure if it was the magical runes tattooed all along the left side of his body, invisible now but still pulsing with a crackling heat beneath his skin, like the dormant embers of a fire waiting to be reignited. Or, if his soul was Pure despite his Dark One humanoid base. Like Ere’s sister, Inanna, and her Mate, Gabriel.

Regardless of which, Sorin wasn’t taking chances.

He didn’t believe in the magnanimity of gods to reunite lovers after death. One onlyfeltduring life. What was the point of being together in death if you couldn’tfeelandliveand all the things that came with living?

Touching. Kissing. Laughing. Crying. Fucking.

Loving.

“Well, that was a thoroughly depressing tale,” Ere said. “Dare I ask where this mythical lyre is now?”

“In the Underworld with Orpheus and Eurydice,” Ariana replied.

“Bollocks,” Ere huffed eloquently.

“I was afraid of that.”
