Chapter Fifteen

“A wise girl knows her limits. A smart girl knows that she has none.”

—Marilyn Monroe

“All right, ladies. I’m gonna give it to you straight,” Divina said solemnly, eyes unblinkingly round to convey the gravity of the situation.

All two dozen virginal maidens gathered around her beside the stream that led to a gorgeous waterfall around the bend, tucked into a jagged rock facing at the bottom of the mountain. Chewie was flopped on his side in the middle, thoroughly enjoying being spoiled by all the petting and stroking as the women took turns fussing over him.

At the first light of dawn, they would storm the mountain.

Andros, Chiron, Ere and Sorin had a plan. Divina wasn’t really privy to it, but she trusted her male. He was going to stamp that usurper Ixion into the ground, then kick his sorry ass over the cliff.

And that would be that.

She didn’t know how they were going to go about procuring the lyre, but that was a problem to solve for another day.

For the next couple hours, they had more important things to contemplate. Because right around that bend, blocked from view by jutting boulders and shielding bushes, their males were washing away the day’s grime under the falls.

Deep-throated masculine rumblings and laughter could be heard. Some playful splashes of water and “horsing” around.

They were obviously in a good mood, the stallions.

And who could blame them? They finally found mates of their own after however many dozens or hundreds of years. That was alongtime to remain celibate. And they were effing stallions!

Distantly, Divina wondered how long centaurs lived on average, and one in particular. They were magical creatures, after all. They obviously lived a lot longer than humans. But were they immortal?

It wasn’t just out of curiosity that she pursued this line of thought. She wanted to know for herself. Because it mattered now.

She wanted to be with Andros forever. Whether in life or death. If, for some reason, he wasn’t immortal, then she needed to know and figure out a way to join him wherever he was going to next. Whether it was the afterlife, Never Never Land, or simply some unconscious void.

She never wanted to be without him.

As to what would happen at the end of this quest…well, she’d figure that out too. She was nothing if not resourceful. And she had a secret weapon:

A woman in love was limitless.

She rolled her shoulders to loosen them and focused back on the topic and audience at hand. She had a job to do.

Wisdom to impart.

The women sat in various poses on the grassy bank after a light repast, their hunger pangs during the journey replaced by bellies full of butterflies.

Anticipation.

Every pair of eyes was glued to Divina’s face, as if she was the messiah come to earth and they were her loyal, reverent followers.

“The birds and the bees,” Divina intoned, pausing a few beats for effect.

Several of the girls blinked with incomprehension as crickets chirped, and an owl cooed in the distance.

“I-I thought you were going to talk about…” Daphne stuttered and blushed, her ruddy cheeks visible even in the descending darkness.

“…howtallthe centaurs are,” she finished weakly.

“What do birds and bees have anything to do with it?” Leila inquired, wrinkling her nose. “I am quite well educated on the flora and fauna of these hills.”

Divina resisted the urge to roll her eyes at the mention of “height.” These ladies needed a crash course on dirty talk.
