Centaurs and their families dodged the onslaught, fleeing into the cavern or under overhangs for cover.

Furious rain splattered upon the ground like liquid javelins, so fierce and fast it obscured everything around like a watery grave.

Divina was immediately soaked to the bone, her thick hair plastered to her face and back. She pushed the offending tresses away and rubbed the water from her eyes as fast as she could, but the unrelenting, deafening rain blocked everything out.

She couldn’t see! Only flashes of dark brown clashing with Andros’ olive torso and black stallion half.

Were they using weapons?

Was that the glint of a sharp axe she saw Ixion wielding overhead?

Did Andros have his own weapon? He couldn’t be unarmed, could he?

Between jagged flashes of lightning within the oppressing darkness of the storm and the sleeting rain, Divina saw deadly flying hooves. Rearing centaurs clashing again and again with resounding booms. Shaking the ground like an earthquake. Exploding the air in resounding collisions.

Above the din of the pouring rain and booming thunder, furious snorts and ferocious neighs could be heard.

The clang of metal. The split of stone.

But try as she might, she couldn’tsee!

She didn’t know who was winning. Just that her heart wanted to pound its way out of her chest. She couldn’t breathe. Probably because she was holding her breath.

If Andros fell…

But he couldn’t fall.

She refused to believe it.

He was the strongest male she’d ever encountered. He wasn’t that helpless colt any more. He was a demi-god. A warrior. A true, courageous protector.

Hewouldn’tfall.

Divina’s nails dug into her palms as she fisted her hands so tightly, they bled. She gritted her teeth and tried her damnest to keep her eyes open, as if looking away for even a moment could be fatal for the one she loved. As if, somehow, her vigil would keep him strong. Infuse him with strength to conquer all odds.

And then…

Just as suddenly as the battle began, all fell eerily silent and still.

The storm abruptly stopped, and the dark clouds overhead parted to reveal a rising dawn, painting the clearing skies in shades of yellow, pink and orange. Illuminating the plateau in scattered pools of light.

The dark centaur lay unmoving upon the ground.

Andros stood over him, head bowed, chest heaving.

But he was standing…

He’d won!

Divina scrambled off of the gelding despite Sorin’s warning rumble. She picked up her tunic skirts and ran toward her male, Chewie barking and bounding at her heels.

Barely, she noticed the broken usurper at Andros’ hooves. Were those brains from his crushed skull spilling onto the ground?

Eeewww.

Determinedly, Divina didn’t peer closer, keeping the dead centaur in her peripheral vision. All she wanted to focus on was her valiant prince.

She was so happy she could burst! She bared all of her teeth in a blinding grin as she ran right up to him and reached out her arms.
