Ere looked at her with new-found admiration.

The ghastly smile finally collapsed as Shifu worked his mouth into his usual humorless line.

“Enough.”

The quietly issued command snapped all of their spines straight at once.

“Pay attention. I will only say this once.”

“We’re all ears,” Ere said as Divina nodded avidly.

“Ancient Greece,” the old man bit out curtly, “Find the horn. Storm the mountain. Retrieve the lyre. Gather the fleece. And bring back the song. Clear?”

“As mud,” Sorin growled.

“I concur,” Ere reinforced.

“That is all you need to know,” the ageless being snapped, his patience clearly at an end. “The rules remain the same. No staying in that time, that place. No transforming into the phoenix and the dragon. You will all be mortal, with perhaps some of your powers when you most need them. But do not count on it. Use your natural gifts.”

“My charms?” Divina asked.

“My brains,” Ere asserted.

My brawn, Sorin didn’t add.

He didn’t have to. Anyone who looked upon him knew not to fuck with the warrior.

Shifu waved a hand obliquely, as if the answer was immaterial. In the next moment, he disappeared.

Just poofed out of existence.

An hourglass suspended in midair appeared out of nowhere and slowly turned on its head.

“Your adventure starts now,” Shifu’s disembodied voice intoned. “Return before the time is up, or the Universe crumbles,”

“Fan-fucking-tastic,” Ere muttered.

Before he, Sorin, Divina and Chewie disappeared as well.
