Chapter Four

“A hard man is good to find.”

—Mae West

Meanwhile, Divina was making friends of her own.

“That is the most adorable creature I have ever beheld!” a girl on the cusp of womanhood squealed with delight, wading through the pool with unabashed eagerness at the sight of Chewie and his multi-colored bows.

“He is a sweetheart,” Divina agreed, scratching the giant puppy behind his small ears, all but invisible in the thick tufts of fur.

Which was amplified by the humidity in the bath hall, making his features practically disappear, especially since he was squinting and panting with pleasure.

“May we pet him too?” another young woman asked, slightly more reserved than the first, but nevertheless venturing closer and reaching out a curious hand.

Her friend nodded fervently beside her, staring at Chewie with stars in her eyes.

Divina loved making new friends.

And whenever she brought one of her pets, especially the furry variety, making friends was always a piece of cake.

Sometimes, her looks and natural flirtatiousness made other women wary. But they quickly learned that she was harmless fluff.

Divina made it a die-hard rule never to entice men who were already claimed. She had no patience for hussies. Women should stick together. Nothing made her madder than two or more women fighting over a man.

Plenty of dicks to go around, ladies, she wanted to broadcast.

And when all else failed, that’s why battery-operated dildos of all colors, sizes, flavors and special effects were invented.

She considered this for a moment, taking in her surroundings.

Perhaps there weren’t battery-operated ones in ancient Greece, but she was certain women the world over, and men for that matter, knew a thing or two about fake penises. And if these villagers didn’t, perhaps she’d enlighten them if she stayed here long enough.

“Of course,” she replied easily, smiling her most winsome smile, scooting over to make room for the others as they crowded close.

“Gather around, girls,” she encouraged. “You can help me bathe him while we’re here.”

Chewie flopped over onto his side at the edge of the bath to give the ladies more surface area to pet and fuss over.

A chorus of coos and awws erupted as the women spoiled her puppy rotten, petting him, brushing his fur with their fingers, playing with his bows.

Just like that, Divina and the other half dozen women in the bath hall became fast friends.

A couple of them brought baskets of food and wine, which they shared generously with everyone, including bits of cheese and meat for Chewie. Before long, the hall rang with their giggles, guffaws and heated gossip.

“Dearest Div,” a woman called Leila gained her attention, “I can’t help but notice the two men you were talking to before you came into the hall. Is one of them yours?”

Divina easily read between the lines. The real question was, “were Ere and Sorin free to be claimed?”

“They are my friends,” she answered. “We’re traveling together through these lands. And they belong to each other.”

She smiled kindly when the meaning of her words dawned on Leila, whose face immediately fell with disappointment.

“I have never seen men as handsome as your friends,” a girl named Daphne said in a worshipful whisper.

“They are so very…tall…” she sighed and trailed off, her breath hitching before she could continue.

They weretallall right, Divina thought with a smirk.
