“Chiron,” the male answered. “Descendent of Centaurus and the sea nymph Philyra. General of the centaur first battalion.”

“State your purpose here, Chiron,” Andros commanded.

The other male hesitated briefly with a frowning flicker, as if he wasn’t used to being spoken to this way. Or perhaps because the speaker was not the person he normally answered to.

But the longer Andros held his gaze, the more a natural acceptance settled behind Chiron’s eyes.

“My troop and I will journey to Thessaly to collect the sacrifice owed to the centaurs tomorrow night.”

Andros nodded, knowing as much.

“You will do so with my escort,” he stated, his tone brooking no dissention.

Chiron stared at him a few moments longer. Fleetingly, the corner of his mouth quirked, but it was gone before Andros could read it properly.

“Lead the way, centaur Andros.”

Andros flicked a glance up at the lead soldier on the wall.

“Human, take us to our lodgings.”

The leader whistled for other soldiers on the ground to do so, while Andros caught some muttered whispers behind his back.

Stables, you mean…such dirty, barbaric beasts…

Andros ignored the taunts.

He was a little dusty from the journey, and so was the centaur troop, but no more so than any of the nearby humans.

As for being barbaric…

He felt the aggression within him. He couldn’t argue that, for a few long minutes, he wanted to unleash the wild beast within. He wanted to fight. But more because his emotions were too raw from before.

In the end, he controlled himself. Chiron was sensible enough not to push him. They werenotbarbaric.

But the beast within stirred restlessly, still bristling with hurt and licking its wounds. He wondered whether that was the reason Divina rejected him. Because he was only half man.

Because she would never look at him the way he looked at her.
