“No!” she cried, all but throwing herself into the pool. Only Miss Seventh’s arms around her waist held her back.

She saw what the colt saw as the gigantic hooves crashed down upon him.

And then—

Darkness.

Divina’s heart stopped as if it had been stamped into the ground along with the baby horse. She lurched backward and landed in a heap of tangled limbs at the pond’s edge, her chest rising and falling rapidly with labored breaths.

“Wh-what—”

“I’m sorry you had to see that,” Miss Seventh murmured, sounding sincerely contrite.

“But you led me here to see it,” Divina accused, barely regaining her voice.

“The Mirror Pond wanted to show you.”

“Butwhy?” Divina bawled, grape-sized tears running down her face to plop from her chin.

She was heartbroken. Baby animals were her weakness. She loved all creatures, but she especially loved babies. And horses were her most favorite animals of all.

“You’ll know when the time is right, I suppose,” her friend said.

“So I can hunt down that centaur monster for what he did?” Divina spat with vehemence.

She wasn’t by nature a violent person. But when her wrath was incited, watch out!

“Well—”

“What is going on here?”

At Cloud’s voice, Divina threw herself blindly into hershi-ge’s strong arms and unleashed a renewed torrent of tears.

“We leave you alone for one minute and you not only disappear, but we find you in such a state,” Ere said from somewhere nearby, though the frustration in his tone was belied by the soothing motion of his hand stroking comfortingly down her back.

“What happened?” Sorin asked gruffly, concern clearly etched in his deep, gravelly voice.

“I-I was just keeping Seventh Sister company when…”

“Miss Seventh?” Cloud asked. “There is no one here but you, Divina.”

She unmuffled her face from Cloud’s chest to look around.

Strange.

Miss Seventh had disappeared.

The Mirror Pond was peaceful as always, none of the nightmare she saw reflected on its serene surface.

She brushed the last tears from her eyes, her breath still shaky but her heartbeat slowing.

“She was just here,” Divina whispered.

She hadn’t imagined it; she was absolutely certain. The vision of that beautiful black colt being ruthlessly attacked was forever tattooed in her memory.

“Come,” Cloud murmured, “stay close to us. There is nothing here. And if there are monsters lurking, we will protect you.”

Divina pushed away from him and stood again on her own feet by her own strength.
