Unable to help herself any more, she cleared her throat and croaked, “Is it to your liking?”

He didn’t look at her, continuing to stare down at the weapon in his hands. His chest expanded rapidly, however, with every breath he took.

Was that a good sign? Eir couldn’t tell.

“No one has ever given me a gift before,” he rasped, his quiet words merely vibrations that emanated from his chest.

“Payment for services, aye. Payment in gratitude too. But…not like this. Just because.”

“Well,” Eir said, for lack of better words, and cleared her throat again.

“No other weapons here suit you,” she tried to explain, trying to downplay what was happening here.

The emotions that husked his voice made her uncomfortable. Raked her raw. The same desperation she felt the night he was drunk, when she witnessed his helpless tears.

“It probably wouldn’t make much of a dent against a Frost Giant,” she hedged. “But at least it might help to take out one of the creature’s eyes. I hear the dreaded jötunn has many.”

“You made this for me,” Kai said quietly, still not looking at her.

Eir fidgeted uncomfortably, smoothing her suddenly clammy hands down her thighs.

“I have a knack for it,” she explained. “I make weapons for all my sisters and even some of the gods. I—”

He wrapped one arm around her waist and crushed her close to his chest, then, devouring her mouth in a ravenous, glorious kiss.

Minutes, perhaps hours later, when he was finally done plundering the depths of her mouth, he pulled slightly away and rested his forehead against hers, still clutching her close.

“Thank you, my Eir. I will use it well.”

She kissed him this time, because how could she not when he was so close, so hot and hard and irresistible against her?

When she had her fill, for the time being, she pulled back to look him in the eyes.

The firestorms that brewed there mesmerized her, just as the smile lines around them enchanted her.

Eir was helplessly, thoroughly bedazzled.

She grinned a loopy, dopey, dumbfounded grin back at him. One that had never crossed her face in the whole of her existence.

Her separate self looked down at them and heaved a defeated, exasperated sigh.

She was well and truly fucked where Kai was concerned.
