Because it will be the battle that takes me away from you. No matter if I live or die. One way or another, I will leave your world.

Leaveyou.

I want to leave it on my own terms. Protecting these humans’ home. Free them from oppression so that they canlive. As I cannot. If I must die over and over again, for what better cause than life?

He didn’t say any of what he thought, merely holding her gaze, letting her look into him. Letting her look deep.

He saw the moment she understood. Saw the realization dawn upon her face, as if she heard all of his thoughts explicitly.

That was when he knew:

Eir saw him. Eirknewhim.

Her eyes shimmered with a watery glaze, and she swallowed convulsively as she gazed into him.

“Well,” she said simply, then cleared her throat.

Slowly, she meandered down his body, pointing out other scars, learning every single one. They spent much of the night like this, until it was almost dawn.

In the final hours, she doffed her clothes and came to him naked. He entered her tight wet heat with a slow, long stroke, and held there.

Thus joined, they fell asleep facing each other. His hand upon her thigh that draped over his hip. His bicep pillowing her head as she tucked her face into the crook of his neck.

In the morning, they awoke this way. Him, undulating his hips into her, caressing deep where only he could reach. Her, looking into his eyes as she stroked her fingers along his face, as if she was trying to memorize him by touch and sight.

They came together with mingled, shuddering breaths, hammering hearts as one. Before they parted to start the day, she kissed him one last time.

Soft and sweet.

“I see you, earth dragon,” she said.

And Kai was content.

Day Four, After: Wonder.

“The scouts will be hidden in snowbanks on the seventh night,” Ere said, pointing with a stick to the farthest northern outpost beyond the village, halfway between the Frost Giant’s ice mountain and their location.

He, Sorin, Kai, Eir, the village elder and the chief of the militia gathered around a large map of these lands, made of several animal hides sewn together and laid out upon the center table in the longhouse.

They were almost done with preparations. Dried food, jugs of water and mead, packed away. Over the past few days, they started evacuating already, transporting necessities to a temporary lair in the caverns on the other side of the woods that abutted the village. A few animals had already been taken there to settle for the duration.

“At the first sign of trouble, they’ll use the catapults to send up flares,” Ere continued. “Likely a blizzard will precede the jötunn. The young, old and weak will head into the eastern forest two nights before, just in case.”

“They will be safe, deep in the underground caverns,” Eir said, tapping a forefinger on the dense tree lines on the map.

“The trolls are not known for their hospitality,” the village elder grumbled. “They do not like visitors as a rule, even the paying ones.”

“Aye,” Eir agreed. “But these trolls owe me. I once brought them a great chest of treasure, the spoils of battle. Both sides had perished in the bloodbath; there was no one left to claim it.”

She shrugged.

“You never know when you might need aid from the mountain dwellers. Even a Frost Giant won’t be able to crush through an entire mountain range.”

Ere nodded.

“The moment we see the warning flares, our first line will ride out. The goal is to keep the giant away from the village perimeter, push him back into the gulley between those two ice mountains. Then, Kai will do his thing.”
