Dane shook his head. “This is between me and the old man. I won’t have you getting your hands dirty.”

King opened his mouth to argue but Dane cut him off. “She’s mine, King. This is my fight.”

King eyed him before shutting his mouth with a nod.

“Does the girl need anything?” The General crossed his arms and leaned back in his seat. “I could send one of my maids to fetch her belongings. My girl Anna has a friend in the lady’s house, we’ll get her things without her father knowing.”

Dane nodded.

Her father would need to be dealt with, as well—eventually. But what mattered first was her safety and her comfort. And the earl’s death, of course. That went without saying.

“Thank you, General.”

“Not at all. Don’t mention it.” The General got to his feet and reached for his cane.

“And I’ll go see what I can find out about Fallenmore’s comings and goings,” Tracker said, already striding toward the door. “Make sure you don’t have an audience.”

He gave a grunt of thanks to Tracker as well, and then it was just him and King.

“So, you’re keeping her then.” King’s voice held a note of droll amusement, which was comforting in its familiarity. “Will you make an honest woman of her?”

He didn’t answer, and King was chuckling as Dane shut the door behind him.

He’d have happily made her his woman if he thought it was what she wanted. But she’d been raised to be a proper lady, and he meant to give her the life she wanted. The life she deserved.
