He hated it and he adored it.So genuine. So sweet. It was wide-eyed and filled with a sort of innocence that no girl who’d grown up by the docks ought to have.

But she did.

Some part of her was untouched by it all.Or had been…until he’d taken her.

“Why, Kitty?”His voice was little more than a rumble, but she didn’t back away.

“I did not want it,” she said.

“You earned it.”

She flinched.

And he was a right arse.He moved closer to her, cupping her face in the palm of his hands.“Tell me the truth, Kitty.”

“That is the truth.I don’t want it.”A petulant little pout formed and he couldn’t stop himself from kissing her lower lip, sucking on it until she gasped.

“You don’t want my money,” he repeated.

“No.”It was a sigh, her dazed gaze was fixed on his mouth.

Good God, his cock was already straining for more. His lewd mind was already conjuring up ten different ways he wanted to take her.“Tell me why, Kitty.”

She wet her lips.“Why what?”

Christ, now she even sounded dazed. He could have her. She’d come willingly. But he needed to know.To understand.

His grip slid into her hair and tightened. Her gaze focused on his, though her lips were still wet and parted.

“Why did you do it?Why did you let me take you if it wasn’t for my money?”

He caught a flicker of sorrow in her eyes and hated himself for it.

“Because…because…” Her eyes welled with tears.“Because I wanted to.”

He frowned and his grip slackened.Enough that she could pull away. She turned her back to him and swiped at her eyes.

“You said you were crying before with the General.”

She turned back, confusion in her eyes.

“Was that true?”

She nodded.

“Why were you crying?”

She opened her mouth and closed it, snapping it shut like she didn’t want to say.

“You have secrets that you told the General and not me?”

She must have heard the rage in his voice because she shook her head quickly. But she didn’t look scared.“I don’t know what you want me to say, King.I don’t…” She scowled with anger of her own.“I don’t understand what’s happening here.”

Neither do I.

He ran a hand over his hair and turned away.“You make me lose all sense.”

Silence. The only answer was the fire’s crackle.

Finally, she said, “I’m sorry.I’ll be leaving soon though, and—”

“No.”He hadn’t meant to say it, but there it was.He turned to face her.“No.Don’t go.”

Her brows drew together and she shook her head.“You don’t want me to stay and you don’t want me to go.I don’t know how to please you.”

He swallowed convulsively. That was because his head was at war with his heart…and his body.Even now his gaze was moving over her luscious breasts and her trim little waist. His fingers itched to touch her.

But if he touched her now…he might never let her go.
