“But you have a chance to get what you want.”

“I don’t even know if that’s what’s going on. Maybe my wolf’s confused. Besides, Kate’s only here for a few weeks–”

“So you’d better get a move on it,” he finished for me. “Come on, Liv. You at least gotta try.”

“Are you saying that for me or for you?”

“I might be living vicariously through you, but can you honestly blame me?”

“No,” I said with a sigh, “I guess not.”

“Go on,” he said while holding out his hand for my gun. “I’ll cover for you.”

“Now?”

“No time like the present, right?”

“But I smell gross.” Not to mention the state of my hair.

“Just go.” He let out an exasperated sigh, then waved at our folks when they looked our way. “Seriously Liv. Do you think it’ll be any easier later on?”

“Who made you the wise one in the family?” I leaned in and pressed his forehead to mine. “I owe you for this.”

“You know where to find me.” He shooed me off the roof, then went back to what he’d been doing.

His confidence boost only lasted so long. By the time I reached the middle of town, it was gone.

Okay, you’ve got this. All I had to do was walk up, say hello–

And what?I wondered as I paced the sidewalk outside of Nora’s shop. Ask her to be my friend? That was something a five-year-old would do, not someone in their early twenties! How was I supposed to approach Kate when the thought of talking to her made me half-sick to the stomach?

“I never should’ve come here,” I mumbled under my breath.

Dustin might’ve been an amazing cheerleader but real life didn’t work that way. There were rules and laws to be followed, none of which included me stalking Kate. Because that’s essentially what I was doing.

Stalking a human.

Not a wolf.

Kate.

She beamed as she spoke to her customer, and I could almost hear her laugh as the gentleman told her about his day. What I wouldn’t have done to be that human, to stand beside her and to laugh with her the same way he was doing right now.

But I wasn’t him. I wasn’t human. And I wasn’t nearly as confident.

Going in and ordering another cupcake sounded easy enough until I tried to move. My heart skipped, lodging itself in the back of my throat as I neared the bakery doors. The door handle was damp, likely from the humidity outside instead of my hands that definitely weren’t covered in sweat.

What do I say to her?I texted my brother as I inched toward the counter.

Dustin never answered.

“Good morning!” Kate’s cheerful voice thrust me from my thoughts, causing me to do a deep dive into a bakery where it was just me and her.

“Morning,” I managed to say loud enough for her to hear.

“You left in a bit of a hurry yesterday. Was everything all right?”

Crap. You saw that?“Yeah, just work. It’s where I’m headed now, but I could use a pick-me-up, so…” I took a breath and forced myself to look over the baked goods instead of at her.
