“I’m hitting the gym.”

“With Sawyer?”

“Yep.” I talk about Sawyer enough that Nico would know who he was, even if Sawyer didn’t frequent the coffee shop.

“I’ll drop you there.”

“Thanks,” I say gratefully. It’s not far, but it’s dark out now, and you can never be too careful. The Guards don’t tend to come this far out, but it’s not impossible. We lock up and head toward Nico’s car to head to the gym. The silence isn’t awkward—things are only awkward with us when I put my foot in it. We’re both tired and enjoying the peaceful drive after a busy day.

“What areyourplans for the evening?” I ask Nico when we’re nearly there.

“Honestly, I’ll probably faceplant my bed.”

“I hope I’m not keeping you from anything or anyone else with these study sessions,” I offer, only half digging for information.

“If I didn’t want to do them, I wouldn’t,” Nico replies, but when I look up, he looks pensive. I wonder if that’s actually true, but I think it is. Even if only for the fact he loves to geek out and share his passion for what he’s learning with someone else.

“Okay,” I concede. We turn the corner and see the glass-fronted Urban Fitness right up ahead. The whole place looks so modern. This area really will become so popular in the near future, which is a worry. Will gentrification bring the Guards, or will we be priced out of the area first?

“I should switch my membership, you know,” he muses as we pull up outside.

“You say that every time you see it,” I remind him.

“And I mean it. Maybe we could work out together.” Nico never initiates us doing anything together beyond studying. I try not to either, as I’m sticking to the rule of not fucking where you work. I do slip up sometimes, hence the burger offer earlier, and I’m sadly buoyed by Nico’s suggestion.

“Why don’t you come in now? They offer trial sessions if someone introduces you.”

“I don’t think I could stand for long enough towatcha session, let alone actually train. Rain check?” he says.

“It’s a date. I mean, not adatedate. It’s a figure of speech.” Jesus, why do I turn into a bumbling idiot when I’m around him? Nico smiles tightly.

“I know, Harlow. Don’t give yourself an aneurysm. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I take that as my dismissal, and he watches me walk in before leaving as I cringe at how ditzy I am with him. He must think I’m a fool. Where’s super-hot, sexy Porno Barbie when you need her?
