“You okay?” Brian asks when he sees me watching her.
“Yeah, just worried about Fleur. How are you?” I ask, turning to face him properly.
“I’m good, thanks. Happy to be getting more hours.”
“Oh, that’s good,” I say, making polite conversation. “How have you got those?”
He shrugs. “Well, with Nico leaving, they asked me if I wanted more hours rather than having to hire someone new.”Sorry, what?“I think they’ll get a part-timer to fill the gap and cover holidays.”
“Nico’s leaving?” I can’t believe it.
“Apparently so,” he says casually, as if it’s not a big deal. As if I’m not losing seeing him nearly every day, spending hours working alongside him. Why did he quit? Will I not get to see him anymore? I guess so. After all, he’s not even mine to miss, right? And maybe it’s a good thing. I can’t even handle two guys right now. Sawyer and I are clearly on two very different wavelengths.
I try to work the afternoon shift without showing how much the news has affected me, and I’m glad that Brian and I aren’t that close, because I have the feeling I’m doing a terrible job.
