Chapter1

“Sir, I have to advise against this.”

Of course he would. It was Phile’s job to advise against everything. That way, no matter what happened, it wouldn’t be considered his fault.

For a moment, I debated the merits of killing him. One vine through the heart would be all it would take to rid me of his presence and annoying tittering forever.

“Kier’s human has more than proved how troublesome the creatures can be.”

I grunted at the reminder of how the little Mia had his best general wrapped around her tiny, powerless finger. “That’s different. Melusine cursed them to depend on each other.” Not that anyone would be able to tell from the outside. The sorceress had made it so every fae would become supernaturally dependent on their human counterpart.

She made them mates.

“Like I told you, I’m not going to allow that to happen to me. I am too important to allow that kind of weakness.” The very possibility of allowing myself to be beholden to such a weak species was unthinkable.

But thanks to the actions of the Seelie kingdom, the humans were necessary. With all of the fae females dead, thanks to a long-gone curse, the only way for the fae to survive was to adapt.

Kier, the general of Earth, was the one who had the idea of bringing human women over and using them to breed. Though the idea had been met with much skepticism, by myself included, the first three humans brought over had all paired off nicely. Even before Melusine cast her spell to bind the humans and fae together, bonds had been forming.

“I grow impatient. Where is Xian?”

“Well, I believe, I think, he might—”

“For fuck’s sake, man. Spit it out.”

“I saw him having a laugh with Giselle.”

I shook my head in disgust. Disgust with Phile for being unable to relay the most basic information. Disgust for Xian for playing with elves when he knew I was expecting him.

Without listening to Phile ramble on any longer, I strode through the castle, toward the guest rooms that Xian had been set up in. The General of Fire wasn’t here on a goddess-damned social visit.

Many in the realm thought the castle of the Unseelie king was a majestic visage of power and grace. But right now, it just felt too fucking big.

“Xian!” I bellowed as soon as I entered the hallway, hopefully giving him enough time to pull out of my servant and get some damn pants on.

I debated using magic to open the door but I was too impatient. Instead, I just kicked the damn thing in.

My warning had apparently worked because Xian was lacing up his leathers as Giselle pulled the blanket tightly across her chest.

I didn’t have much experience with the elven servant, not for lack of trying on her part. Ever since she’d arrived, she’d been on the prowl for an advantageous marriage. Now that humans were involved, it seemed she was ramping up her seduction attempts.

Why she thought a man whore like Xian was a potential target was beyond me, but I couldn’t bring myself to care.

All that mattered to me was that Xian got his ass to the portal before it closed. “So sorry to interrupt,” I said dryly.

The redheaded bastard just smiled cockily as he grabbed his shirt, gave Giselle a wink, and followed me out of the room.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Xian doubled his steps to catch up to me. “It’s not my fault the elves have an extra layer of desperation. She knows I’m not going to settle down with her.”

“Just because she knows doesn’t mean she won’t try.”

“But that makes her all the more eager between the sheets.”

I growled in annoyance. I didn’t have the luxury of leading females on. If I gave anyone, even an elven servant, false hope, it could lead to a kingdom-wide crisis.

“When are we leaving?”
