Chapter8

My mind raced with all the ways I could fight Jaiden, but in the end I crawled into the bed. It was a king size, so there was plenty of room for me to lay down without being too close to him.

And hopefully the same magic that kept me from leaving the bathroom would keep him from breaking his word to not touch me.

Magic. Who knew? But I could figure this out. If I could figure out quantum physics, I could wrap my mind around this new field of science.

And that’s all this was. A different type of science. Once I knew the rules, boundaries, and limitations, I would master this too.

I debated putting on my old clothes, but the gray pencil skirt and black tank top were both filthy and the least comfortable things I could think to sleep in.

Besides, his shirt covered much more than the tank top did. And for some reason, even though he’d been wearing it all night, it smelled as though it had just come out of the wash. It smelled like a mixture of forest and ash. Intoxicating. But I refused to allow myself to think about it.

Jaiden was clearly awake, certain parts of him extra awake, but he made no moves toward me as I climbed under the covers and turned my back to him.

I expected to toss and turn for hours but somehow I fell into sleep almost immediately.

The dream that came to me was unlike any dream I’d ever had. For one, I immediately knew I was dreaming. I stood in the middle of an ancient-looking forest, with vines, ferns, and impossibly wide trees all around me.

A deep mist surrounded me, not allowing me to see more than ten or twenty feet in any direction. If I didn’t know this was a dream, I’d probably be terrified.

But this was a unique experience for me. I could actually study a dream! I reached out to a fern, letting the leaf slide through my fingers. It felt cool to the touch, but almost like a liquid. Like my hand was going through a very thick gas.How fascinating...

“What an odd choice for a queen,” said a voice from behind me.

I whirled around to see a woman just a foot away.Womanseemed like too inconsequential of a word. She was a goddess. A nymph. Something more than...well, justmore.

Her black hair hung down to her waist, framing a low-cut, deep-red gown. Very impractical for a walk through the woods, in my opinion.

It was only then that I realized I was also dressed impractically in a silver gown. The fabric was shiny and so light I almost felt naked. The top went up to my collarbones but left nothing to the imagination. I felt cool air on my back, signaling that it was dangerously low-cut back there.

“A human designed that dress,” said the woman. “I thought you might be more comfortable in it. I know so little of mortals.”

A human designed this?I had a hard time believing that. Whoever this human was, I didn’t think we had much in common. “Sweatpants and a T-shirt would’ve been fine too,” I muttered.

“My apologies. If we had more time, I’d make the adjustment. But my connection to the mortal realm is unstable. Like a bridge over choppy waters. Waters with sharks. Sharks with teeth. Sharp teeth that want to tear and rip and shred.”

“Thanks for that vivid picture.”

“Words flow. Sometimes a torrent. Sometimes a trickle. Some days are better than others.”

I nodded. She was out of it, but appeared to know she wasn’t all there. “You brought me here to tell me something?”

“Information is power. You can’t know the right action if you don’t know the information.”

As a scientist, I totally agreed. As a person, she freaked me out. “What information do you want to tell me?”

“Give in.”

“Huh?” That wasn’t information.

“He thinks if you surrender, he will own you. But if you surrender, you will own him. Remember this.”

“Huh? I’m gonna need you to be more specific.”

“Our connection is fading. The fairy kings can destroy all of our worlds in their battles. You will have to defeat them both.”

Kings? As in more than one?“What am I supposed to do? Talk to me like I’m a small, stupid child.”
