“You should be aware,” he said finally, shocking me, “Seran, the Seelie king, is in the mortal realm.”

“Seelie King... I’m not exactly a fairy expert, but those are the good ones, right?”

Xian threw his head back and laughed. “Stupid humans.”

It wasn’t that funny. Considering how I’d been treated by the Unseelie so far, theydidn’t seem like the good guys.

“There is no good and evil where the fae are concerned,” said Jaiden. “Our power comes from different places. Seelie from the skies above, Unseelie from the earth below. But Unseelie have spent our lives separate from the mortal realm. We’ve never concerned ourselves with the lives of mortals.” Before I could protest, he added, “Until recently.”

“So they’ve been kidnapping women all this time?”

“That and everything else,” grumbled Xian.

I ignored him, because he wasn’t giving me any good information.

“We need human women to survive. Something that is only necessary because of magics cast by the Seelie kingdom. But Seelie have seen humans as toys to entertain themselves with. The legends of the fae are all because of Seelie actions. The fatal deals. Dancing to the death. Poisoned food. Tricksters. They’ve been making a sport of torturing your kind for centuries.”

“Okay. So Seelie bad for humans. Unseelie slightly less bad. What’s the problem with him being here now? It sounds like they party over here all the time.”

“The problem is that we’re only two Unseelie. If King Seran is simply here for a good time, it isn’t an issue.”

Xian shook his head. “He’s not here for fun. King Seran hasn’t come to the mortal realm for decades. The fact that he chose now has to be because we’re here. We need to go back now before he can stage an attack that we’re ill-prepared for.”

I didn’t want to be hauled into this terrible-sounding Land of Fae, but I was still confused. “What is the problem with going over now? Why do this stupid claiming thing first?”

Both men were quiet and exchanged a look. Which meant it was surely something I wouldn’t want to hear.

“We’ll discuss it later,” said Jaiden with enough conviction to tell me he was serious about it.

“Fine. Keep the little human out of it if you want. But from now on, you both better stay out of my dreams.”

A wicked smile twisted Jaiden’s mouth. “We don’t have the power to dream walk. Why, did you dream of me?”

My face fell. Was he messing with me?The woman in the dream had told me to surrender to him, so it made sense that he’d invaded my sleep to get his way.

But he was so sincere in his wicked joy that I’d dreamed of him. “I didn’t dream of you,” I said quickly, suddenly regretting I’d even brought it up.

“Does that mean you dreamt of me?” asked Xian, a flirtatious glint in his eye.

The air whooshed around us, and Xian flew back into a wall, leaving a fae-shaped indentation where he’d slammed into the drywall.

“Pack up your things,” ordered Jaiden as he moved out of the kitchen. “We’re leaving here in fifteen minutes.”

Of all the things I learned this morning, one thing stood out the most: Jaiden was the jealous type.
