“So, I love Kier. That’s just a fact. I do not love kidnapping women and forcing them to pop out babies. I am trying to get Kier to change the process. I mean, there are plenty of women who’d happily volunteer to have a super-hot fae sugar daddy. No kidnapping necessary. But, once again, fae don’t like thinking of us as equals. I told Jaiden that if he was more discerning about the women, it would lead to happier matches. And since I mentioned that colleges would be a good place to recruit, the first place he went was to a university. Your university. So you’re welcome.”

“There are very few ways you can be blamed for this.” And I couldn’t really say I was upset about Jaiden finding me. Even now, all I could think about was seeing him again. “Where is he? Did he leave?”

Mia bit her bottom lip and raised a brow. “Oh, honey. We couldn’t drag him away from you even if we tried. You’re inside his castle. Inside his bedroom.”

“His room. Which means we aren’t on Earth anymore?”

She nodded. “Your injuries were very severe. We got you back here as soon as we could so you could be healed. It takes a strong connection to the Fade to do that much mending. You’ve been out for about two days. The fact that he wasn’t here when you woke up is crazy. He’s going to barge in here any minute now and freak out.”

“A fae freak-out seems rather destructive.”

“Oh yeah. You know him better than I thought then. But I’m glad I was here. I mean...there aren’t many humans here. And I think you’re good for him.”

That seemed rich, coming from a woman like her—this badass warrior woman who could probably kill me with a flick of a wrist. “He’s a king. I am nothing more than convenient.”

“Babe, Seran had you by the fucking throat and you bombed the motherfucker. At this point, I think we should be bowing down to you.”

A sense of pride filled me. That had been pretty amazing. Who thought I would be able to go toe-to-toe with two different fae kings and hold my own? Just a few days ago, I’d been intimidated by Grant, of all people.

My pride was quickly overshadowed by reality. “Except we aren’t here to be smart or badass, are we? We’re here to make babies. Should I start planning you a shower?”

Mia seemed so independent, I assumed that the reminder would sober her. But instead, she snickered and leaned forward, resting her arms on her knees. “You know, I never thought I’d have kids.”

“I’m sure that revelation went over well.”

“When you’re childfree, people love to tell you that you’ll change your mind someday. It always drove me crazy.”

“Are you telling me that Kier changed your mind?”

She barked out a laugh. “Oh no. He told me that as long as I was with him, he’d be happy. No baby pressure at all. It’s the immortality thing that threw me.”

I couldn’t have heard that right. “Immortality?”

“I mean, it’s one thing to not want to have kids in a human lifetime. But after one or two hundred years, we might get bored.”

“Can we go back to the immortality thing?”

“They’re fae. They don’t play by human rules.”

“Maybe not human rules, but there are certain laws of nature that everything has to abide by.”

“Well, I think that you’re going to have to get used to a new set of laws. But about the babymaker thing, I told Kier I didn’t want kids, and he was happy as long as he had me. But he’s not a king, so...”

The door pushed open hard enough to slam against the wall.

I shot to standing as though I’d been caught doing something I shouldn’t.

“You’re awake,” declared Jaiden from where he stood in the doorway.

“I am,” I said awkwardly. Not exactly the reunion I’d been expecting.

“I’ll just leave you to it.” Mia pushed herself up. “You have some catching up to do.” She gave me a little wink before squeezing past Jaiden and closing the door behind her.

For a few long moments, Jaiden and I stood in our places, neither making the first move.

He broke the silence first. “I was supposed to be informed when you woke up.”

It was a sudden reminder that I’d just been unconscious for days. I probably looked like a train wreck and he looked like, well, like fae royalty.
