Chapter3

She was scared of me. That meant she had good instincts. Good qualities I’d want to be passed onto my heir.

The second she’d touched me, I knew she was the one. Though I couldn’t say exactly what it was, I just knew she was my future queen.

At first glance, she didn’t scream royalty. She was obviously unsure of herself and seemed like the type of prey animal I’d eat as an hors d’oeuvre.

Her straw-colored hair was falling out of her braid in whisps all around her face. Although other human females around us had their faces covered in some type of paint for decoration, she didn’t need any to show her beauty.

From my first impression, I didn’t sense any sort of false modesty. Her mind seemed to constantly be whirling in the background, as though she existed more in her mental realm than any physical one.

That should be a bad thing. I didn’t want some flighty human as my queen. I wanted someone of beauty and royal bearing.

But I wasn’t thinking as a king at the moment. I was thinking as a fae who found a mortal to entice and trap. The Seelie were better known for pulling things like this—playing with mortals and enjoying the hunt and chase.

I always thought I was above such things. Now I knew I just hadn’t found the right enticement.

“There are females all around us,” pointed out Xian as we followed my prize.

I came to a halt and stared down my general. “Are you telling me I made a mistake?”

A lesser man would be cowed by the way I said it, but Xian wasn’t one to cower easily. “You brought me here to watch your back. I’ll do that, even if it means protecting you from yourself.”

I growled and looked up just in time to see my female ducking into one of the establishments. Was she hiding from me, or was that where she’d intended to go in the first place?

I doubled my pace and found that she had entered some sort of human tavern. Did this mean my female was the fun sort who liked to imbibe drinks and tell loud jokes? She hadn’t seemed like the sort, though I had a feeling she had plenty of surprises in store for me.

A few of the patrons, all younger than my female from the looks of it, turned to stare at Xian and me, but I didn’t acknowledge any of them.

My eyes were only on my mate. As she approached a table of human males, a low growl emerged from my throat. Did one of these unworthy males think he was her mate? If so, I’d be happy to prove them wrong.

In the Land of Fae, everything was up for grabs, if you had enough power. Even my own kingdom was only mine because I took it by force.

I trained my entire life to amass enough magic and control that no one would be able to challenge me. According to rumor, Kier would have a real chance if we were to battle, but he and I had long since come to an understanding.

Namely the understanding that he didn’t want the responsibility of ruling.

As for Radien, Xian, and Wolfe... With enough time and motivation, any of them could become a threat. Such was the struggle of ruling. I had to surround myself with capable soldiers. Even if the very generals I trusted the most could end up being the most dangerous in the long run.

But I’d be a fool of a leader to surround myself with those less capable for the sole purpose of protecting my own position.

My mate and the males exchanged a few words, but it was too loud in the crowded, dark space to hear what was being said.

It didn’t help that the other females in the room were much too interested in Xian and me.

My general was more than happy with the attention, and I tried to ease away from the crowds. As we garnered more of a crowd, the humans blocked my view of my mate.

I shoved a blonde woman aside, but my mate was no longer at the table with the males.

Fuck. I wasn’t about to let her get away from me that easily.

And if any of the human males thought they would keep her from me, I’d pulverize them.
