Arthur’s expression softened. He cupped her face in his hands.

“We’ll figure it out. If Lord Blackmore knows, then I’m sure he’ll be able to find out.”

“He doesn’t trust Mr Hayward, does he?”

“I don’t think I would, either, if I were in his shoes. The man is too suspicious and lying about where he has been is concerning. But I’ll mention it to him.” He kissed her forehead. “You go and find Lady Blackmore.”

“I have to find the Earl.”

“I’ll go to him. He’s probably still resting after yesterday.” Arthur stroked her cheek. “Don’t fret over this. I’ll deal with it.”

Abigail hoped so; she didn’t think she could deal with it herself. Especially if it meant a lie like this could be more meaningful than she thought.
