She couldn’t begin to imagine how Rafe was feeling.

“I’ll get the horse.” Rafe started to move away. “Just wait a moment.”

“No. Not yet.” Victoria turned into him, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Can you just hold me for a moment?”

“What about Hayward?”

“Please?”

Rafe looked like he was about to protest, but he put his arms around her again, stroking her back and hair as Victoria leaned into him. She had never felt so relieved to know that her husband was all right. If they hadn’t realised what was going on, or if they had been too late….

She didn’t want to think about that. It was going to send her into hysterics, and Victoria didn’t want that.

“I love you.”

Rafe tensed up.

“What did you say?”

Victoria looked up and found her husband staring at her in bewilderment. She licked her lips.

“I love you. I’m glad I got to say it. Knowing you could have died, and I didn’t tell you….”

She didn’t get any further before Rafe was kissing her. Victoria clung to his shoulders, holding on tightly as Rafe almost squeezed the air out of her. Both were panting heavily when they broke the kiss, Rafe’s eyes seemed to be glowing as he stared at her.

“I never thought I’d hear you say that,” he rasped.

“I never thought I’d say it.”

“What made you change your mind?”

“Maybe when I saw you weren’t what I expected. When I saw a side to you that I didn’t think existed.” Victoria swallowed. “Can you forgive me for being so horrible to you? I did say some nasty things.”

“I can forgive you for anything.” Rafe cupped her head in his hands. “Just promise me that you’ll always believe me, and you won’t leave me.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Good.” Rafe kissed her. “I love you, too. And I’m glad Hayward didn’t ruin that for me.”

He loved her. Victoria knew she shouldn’t be smiling right now, but she didn’t care. She stroked his cheek, brushing her thumb over the graze. It was deeper than she expected, and it made Rafe flinch.

“You need that to be seen to.”

“Once Hayward’s been dealt with. And after I’ve talked to your parents.”

“My parents? Oh.” Victoria grimaced. “I had forgotten they were coming this morning.”

“It’s not going to be a pleasant conversation, telling them about their nephew.” Rafe sighed. “I have to think how I’m going to put it to them.”

“I’ll do it.”

“Are you sure?”

Victoria nodded.

“They’re my parents, and Gregory is my cousin. I’ll tell them. But if you’re there with me, it will help.”

Rafe smiled.

“I’m not going anywhere. I promise.”
