Something flashed in her eyes, and Rafe found himself wavering. She was beautiful; tall and graceful, she had fire. And those hazel eyes of hers showed so much emotion. So much anger.

Anger at him? They had barely met.

“Well, that was not fun.”

Rafe jumped when he heard Charlie’s voice. He had almost forgotten he was there. Now his friend was coming towards them, holding onto the reins of his horse with his attention on the young woman.

“Forgive me for scaring you, miss. I didn’t realise there was someone there.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Do you normally ride like a maniac?”

“Now that’s a little unfair…” Charlie protested, but she cut him off.

“I don’t know how you ride where you come from, but we don’t do it here. How about you learn the customs and manners of our country before you come over here and behave in such a way?”

Rafe frowned.

“There’s no need to be rude, my lady.”

“Oh, really?” She turned away. “Filthy and uncouth, the pair of you.”

Rafe stared after her as she stormed away, walking with long, firm strides. He couldn’t stop looking at her, even when she was angry. There was something about her that drew him in.

She was a beautiful woman, no doubt about it. Rafe was very aware of it.

“Careful there, lover boy,” Charlie commented as he nudged his friend. “You can’t be staring at women like that.”

“What? I was just….”

“She’s safe, and she’s being a stuck-up madam about it because we chose to save her instead of leaving her to her own devices.” Charlie steadied his horse and began to mount up again. “Let’s get going. We’re not going to get anywhere if you keep staring after a rude young lady.”

He was right. But Rafe had a feeling it was going to be a while before he stopped thinking about her.
