Then he really would be a murderer this time.

“I can’t believe this,” Victoria groaned. “I thought nobody would catch me. I thought I could get away. Why do you always ruin things?”

“I’m good like that.” Rafe sat forward. “But you need to realise that doing something like this isn’t something you can do on a whim. It’s incredibly dangerous.”

“I can take care of myself.”

“I don’t believe you. You were happy to run away without knowing what you were truly going to do. I understand why you want to run—”

“I’m sure you do,” Victoria said sarcastically.

Rafe ignored her.

“But this is not the way to do it.”

“And what do you think I should do instead? Get married to you and have to deal with my brother’s murderer for the rest of my life?” Victoria shook her head, her eyes blazing. “I was prepared to go through with marrying your brother and living apart, but I won’t even contemplate that with you. Never you.”

That hurt more than Rafe expected. He pushed that aside, pulling Victoria’s bag closer to him.

“It won’t be long until we get to your estate. If we’re lucky, you can get back inside without anyone noticing. That’s providing nobody noticed you leaving.”

“What’s to stop me from leaving once you’re gone?”

“You won’t get far when I’ve got your bag with me.”

“What? But my savings are in that bag!”

“I’m not going to steal it, but I’ll hold onto it until you come to me with a solid plan on what you want. If you can’t, you don’t get it back until after the wedding.”

Victoria scowled. She looked like she wasn’t sure whether to scream in anger or burst into tears.

“I never thought you’d be controlling as well as a killer.”

“There are a lot of things you don’t know about me.” Rafe settled back, watching her with a hard stare. “Now, be quiet and think about how much trouble you could have gotten yourself into. I’m not going to say more than I already have. And you know I’m right about what I’ve said.”

Victoria was breathing heavily. Now he could see her eyes shimmering with tears.

“I hate you.”

Rafe didn’t respond. There was nothing he could say to that.
