“Trust me, Lady Blackmore, when you see the nightmares for yourself, you’ll be doubting his guilt as well. Guilty men don’t have nightmares like that. Trust me, I’ve met men who have killed others and sleep well regardless. Rafe’s not like that.”

“You’re only saying that because you’re his friend.”

“Maybe. But you shouldn’t write Rafe off like that.” Mayfield got to his feet. “The least you can do, as his wife, is to take things with a grain of salt.”

Victoria fixed him with a hard stare. Mayfield sighed and turned away.

“I’ll leave you to it, my lady. Will you be down tomorrow? You can’t stay in your room all day.”

“I’ll do what I want, Mr Mayfield. Make sure you close the door behind you.”

Mayfield gave her a nod and left the room, closing the door behind him. Then Victoria buried her head in her hands. Now she really had no idea what to do. Why did he have to go and say that?

And why did he have to put that many doubts into her own head? It just wasn’t fair. It felt like everyone was on her husband’s side. There was no one on hers.

Victoria was feeling more and more alone by the second.
