“Really? How does this help me?”

“He’s recently come back to Whitby. His little sister, Charlotte, is getting married this week. I heard that he’s staying at the family home down by the quay.” Manning paused. “He was one of the beaters, and he found you unconscious that day.”

“He found me?” Rafe frowned. “I don’t remember being found by anyone.”

“That’s what he said. Maybe he saw something. It could be worth talking to him.”

Maybe it was. It might not do anything, but it might also help Rafe figure out what really happened. There were three main people who could actually tell him what happened: his father, Sebastien, and Gregory Hayward. But his family were on his side, and Hayward was adamant that he killed Richard. And he was also the only one of the three still alive.

Perhaps finding out from someone else would help.

“The other people who were present at this hunt. Do you know where they are now?”

“A couple of the footmen were there and are still in the household. I can find out where everyone else is.”

“Do it. I think it’s about time that I sorted out my memories.” Rafe got off the bed. “I’m sick and tired of being plagued by something that doesn’t give me the answers I need.”

“Of course, my lord.” Manning started laying the clothes out on the bed. “Whatever you need.”

Rafe found himself smiling. There was one thing you could say about Manning: he was loyal. He didn’t have to doubt that man on anything.
