Her mouth opened and closed. Then she swallowed.
“I don’t believe you could hurt me. You did look out for me when I tried to run away.”
“You may think a lot of things about me, but I would never let a woman be out at that time of night. You could have been hurt, or worse.”
“You’ve already scolded me about it, Blackmore.”
Blackmore. Rafe really wished she could call him by his name. He covered her hand with his, moving in closer.
“What I should have done was put you over my knee for doing something so stupid.”
“What?” Victoria’s eyes went wide. “You would do something like that?”
“I was sorely tempted. You deserve a swatting for attempting it.”
Victoria snorted.
“You wouldn’t get a chance now.”
“You think I couldn’t?”
“I know you couldn’t.”
Had he moved closer again, or was it her? Rafe wasn’t sure anymore. He leaned in, watching as Victoria’s lips parted. For a prickly person, she was full of fire. And he wanted that.
He wanted her.
“What about everything else? Will I still get a chance?”
“What…everything else?” Victoria gulped. “What do you mean?”
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Then he kissed her.
