“It’s all right,” he soothed. “Everything’s going to be all right.”

“Rafe….”

“We’re both alive, and we’re both safe. Whoever tried to kill Benjamin isn’t going to get away with this.”

Victoria could feel the tears escaping. Squeezing her eyes shut, she gripped tighter onto Rafe.

“Can you forgive me?”

“For what?”

“For thinking you killed my brother. I…I really thought….”

“I know what you really thought. There were times when I thought I had done it myself.”

“But….”

“I don’t blame you for thinking it was me. If it were anyone else in that position, I would have thought the same thing.” Rafe lifted her chin gently to make her look at him. “I don’t blame you for anything.”

Victoria swallowed. She bit her lip.

“I didn’t think you would forgive me so readily.”

“I think I would forgive you for anything.”

“What does that mean?”

Rafe hesitated. Then he kissed her. Victoria tried to kiss him harder, but he withdrew after a moment, resting his forehead against her.

“Just having you say you believe me and that you’re safe is enough for me.”

“If only I’d known before.” Victoria cupped his face in her hands. “I wish I had listened.”

“I’m not going to blame you for that. Someone took a lot of time to blame me for it.” Rafe kissed her again. “We just need to find out who did it.”

“But until then, what do we do?”

“We will just have to wait. See if anyone else can shed some light on things.” Rafe withdrew a little with a sigh. “I’m sure I’m going to have to ask your cousin about what he saw. That I’m not looking forward to.”

“Gregory?” Victoria frowned. “He’s under the belief that you killed Richard. I doubt he’s going to change his mind.”

“Maybe in light of this new evidence….”

“I saw him a few weeks before you returned to England. He is still steadfast in his opinion about you.”

“Then perhaps you can talk to him? If I speak to him, it’s probably going to end up in a fight.”

Victoria didn’t think that would help. Gregory hadn’t changed his opinion. Also, if she was honest, she wasn’t comfortable being around her cousin after he reminded her of the proposal he had offered her years ago. He hadn’t come to the wedding as he had claimed to be away dealing with something at the time.

Also, he had left thinking she was going to marry Sebastien. Victoria didn’t want to think what he would say or do when he found out it was actually Rafe she had married.

“I think it’s best that we leave him alone. It’s not something either of us should be approaching him with. Gregory is more than likely going to go into a rage.”

“Because you’re married to me?”

“He still doesn’t know about the change of husbands. He will cause an uproar about it.”

Rafe grunted.
