Come what may, her heart pled with her to proceed and to pursue the love that she so deeply felt. If that ended in ruin, then so be it. Margaret did not know what else to do because never had she been so in love before.

Pushing the letter aside, Margaret couldn’t help but wonder what her mother might have thought of all of this. She merely assumed that her mother would give her blessing so long as Margaret’s heart was involved. That was the kind of woman that her mother was and how she so desperately missed her.

Just then, Margaret undertook something that she rarely did. She got down upon her knees, tilted her chin up towards the heavens, and closed her eyes. Yes, she would pray to her mother and hope that her words might reach her up in the Lord’s castle.

“Mama, I used to speak with you frequently,” Margaret began. “But as you know, things with father have turned dire, and I fear that this business has disassociated me from myself, in some manner. I am sure that you look down upon me, and I hope you do not judge what transpires with John Harrington. Oh, Mother,” Margaret pled, “I know that he is a good man. He is protective and true. If there is anything that you can do from above, or if you could speak with the Lord Himself and ask him to assist me, it would be most kind. I love you and miss you dearly.”

With that, Margaret crossed herself and then opened her eyes. A feeling of calm washed over her after making this prayer. Her mother was listening. Margaret was sure of it.

The afternoon passed without consequence. Margaret found that she did not wish to go down for tea, and so Jane brought it up, and they sat and chatted until it was time to dress Margaret for supper. She asked to be dressed plainly, as though in mourning, for she sensed the difficult evening ahead.

Jane did not mention her brother whilst Margaret was being dressed. Margaret sensed that perhaps the entire issue had become overwhelming for Jane. So be it. Margaret would afford Jane all of the silence that she desired.

Once she was fully arrayed, Margaret said, “Here is a letter that I have written to your brother. Would you be so good to deliver it?”

Jane nodded her head softly.
