Marta found herself stretched out against the door. She was cornered. Baldwin stepped towards her, his motions sure and sturdy until he was only a few inches away. His nose was mere inches, and his lips parted only slightly, seemingly urgent with the singular desire to kiss her, press her body against the wood of the door, and grip her waist and ensure that a moan rippled out from between her lips and shuddered through him.

It was strange and foreign and illegal, operating like this. Baldwin’s hand pressed across her stomach, and every limb on her body shuddered with madness and excitement. Her eyelids crept down and closed her in, in a prison of her own lustful thoughts. Already, she allowed herself to forget about the wretched hours during which the Duke had attempted to claim her. With Baldwin’s hand pressed against her, she knew nothing else but him, her frantic heart, and the pulse between her legs.

With her eyes closed, she felt the first hint of Baldwin’s lips across hers. Her spine tingled; fire and chill seemed to join at the top of her shoulders and sweep across her breasts. Baldwin’s hand drew a line from her stomach towards those bulging breasts, his thumb tucked beneath the fabric, placed just an inch above her nipple. He owned her completely in body, mind, and soul. Yet how could they beat what the Duke of Remington yearned for so completely?

The moment their kiss broke, her eyes fluttered open to gaze into his dark ones. She opened her lips to whisper his name, just as softly as she possibly could: “Baldwin. Darling Baldwin. Why? Why must this come between us? Isn’t there something you can do…”

But altogether too swiftly, there was a call from the dining room. Tatiana burst into the hallway, her cheeks blotchy, and her hands in fists. Just in time, Baldwin jumped back and turned around. The two watched as Tatiana stomped towards the back garden to fetch her children. When she reached the back door, she jumped around and hollered towards the dining room.

“Ewan! It’s no wonder you haven’t yet found a woman to marry you. You’re a wretched, obstinate creature, without a care in the world for anyone except yourself. Mother agrees with me, and it’s the reason she hasn’t fought to find you a suitor as of yet.”

“And you’re a right wretched woman who seems to lack any sort of love for your husband. The entire world is privy to your affair, Lady Tatiana. Understand that you’re not getting away with everything you perceive you are!” Ewan hollered back.

But already, Tatiana had flashed through the garden door and disappeared. Baldwin and Marta lent one another wide-eyed gazes. It was clear that they weren’t the only creatures in their world with gut-wrenching problems. Marta felt almost assured by this. How grand it was not to feel so alone.
