“Lucy Wilds, will you be my wife?” he asked. Lucy gasped, and he grinned up at her. “Enjoy this library with me, for the rest of our lives? There are still so many shelves that need to be filled. I left them for you, so that this library is wholly yours.”

She softened. He meant it. She knew that he did—she could see it in his eyes, gleaming back at her. He loved her, and he wanted to share his life with her.

“Yes,” she said, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. Silas beamed, standing up. He wiped away her tears with his thumbs, looking at her tenderly, and then he finally leaned in to kiss her.

His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her in close to him. She wrapped her arms around him, holding onto him. She pulled away, looking around at her beautiful library.

“I can’t believe that you did this for me,” she said.

“Dinah mentioned that I needed to prove to you that I loved you,” he said. “Your aunt told me a while back that the way to your heart was through books. I listened to her.”

“She’s going to be so very happy.” Lucy was excited to return, to tell Aunt Joan everything. She would be overjoyed at the news.

“She already knows,” Silas assured her.

“She does?” Lucy was surprised. Aunt Joan was notorious for not keeping secrets, particularly when she was excited.

“Yesterday, when she said that she was visiting Mrs Trent,” he explained. “She came here, to call on me. I asked her for her permission,” he explained. “She happily gave it.”

Lucy smiled up at him. She loved him; she had never stopped loving him. She could see their life together, one filled with love and happiness.
