Chapter 67

As Silas locked the door to the library, Lucy listened to the sound of his booted feet clicking across the floor. The loud click of the lock, sliding into place. She suddenly realized that he had put the lock there on purpose. She felt hyperaware of his every move.

Her heart beat fast. Arousal was pooling between her legs. She wanted this. Though she hadn’t known that they were going to go so far, she felt ready.

“I don’t believe they’ve missed us yet,” he said, standing behind her and wrapping his arms around her. She leaned back into him, her body melting up against his.

“No,” she agreed. “They were rather into their game of cards.”

Lucy turned towards him. He kissed her, then laid her down on the dark velvet-upholstered chaise. She let him guide her. She was unsure of herself, a little nervous, if she was being honest. He slipped her skirts up over her hips.

He moved smoothly, clearly knowing what he was doing, had done so many times before. Parting her legs, he used his tongue to pleasure her. Lucy leaned her head back against the chaise. It took her a moment, but she relaxed into it. She was suffused with warmth. It was like nervous butterflies, but better.

She could feel herself being wound up by the lapping of his tongue. She moaned, wrapping her fingers in his hair. This was the most intoxicating and erotic experience of her life so far. She embraced it, allowing Silas to have his way with her.

“God, you’re perfect,” he said, pausing.

“How do you know to do that?” she asked, looking down at where he had positioned himself between her legs.

“Practice, my dear.” He moved his fingers in and out, teasing her in just the right places. She could feel his gaze on her—she felt the most attractive that she’d ever felt. She lay back, her back arching as she was wracked on the stormy sea of her own pleasure being sated.

Silas alternated using his tongue and his fingers, stirring her up until she was crying out. She covered her mouth with her hand to muffle her cries, suddenly worried that someone might come looking for them and overhear.

He reached up, pulling her hand away. They grinned at each other and then he began again, until finally, Lucy felt as though she had nothing left. He got up onto the chaise beside her and she sagged against him. Satiated, she found herself staring up at the glass dome. It was filled with the utter black of the night sky. She could see the stars, so cold and small.

Silas curled his body around hers. She turned towards him, kissing him. She felt closer to him than ever before. Sometimes, she worried she wouldn’t be enough for him, particularly when she’d heard how many women he’d been with.

“Did I do well?” she asked.

“You did perfectly,” he told her, looking at her tenderly. “You know, I’ve never had sex with someone that I’ve been in love with. It’s far better than any other sex there is.”

“Was that sex?” she asked.

“Of a kind,” he replied.

She smiled at him, then gasped. “We should get back to them. They’ll be looking for us at any minute.”

They both stood up from the chaise, and he helped her to get her dress straightened.

“They’ll all know,” she hissed. When she put her hands to her cheeks, she could feel that they were still burning. Lucy had never felt scandalous before. And she had never gone as far as she had that night. But she trusted Silas.

“Chances are, they haven’t even missed us,” he remarked. “Between the champagne and cards, they’ll all be quite wrapped up.”

They returned to the party, both gripping the other’s hand. Lucy’s cheeks were bright red, flushed from Silas’ exertions. No one had noticed that they had been gone. No one at all. He handed her a glass of champagne. She accepted it, clinking it against his. Then, they both sipped their drinks in silence, the weight of what they had just done stretching deliciously between them.

She stood on the edge of the gathering, looking around among everyone there. Aunt Joan was exclaiming excitedly and her cheeks were pink. Beside her, she had a glass of champagne.

“I won!” her aunt declared, and everyone clapped.

Even those at the pianoforte had gathered around the table.

Lucy’s heart felt so full. She had never known such joy. For though she was no longer virtuous, she knew that Silas would stop at nothing to marry her. She was in love, and that was what people in love did—they trusted one another. Their eyes met. Silas beamed at her, his eyes softening. She felt her heart do a happy flip.

The card game ended not long after. The players all went their separate ways, most of them to the refreshments table that had been set up. Dinah came over to Lucy.

“They were wondering where you went,” she said. Lucy, horrified, blinked at her.
