“It would be charming if he had buried something recently,” Lucy said, her mind considering the possibilities of what he could have buried—money, jewels.

“It would,” Silas agreed with a laugh. “Though I think it unlikely. My siblings and I are grown. Why would he do such a thing now?”

“It is possible,” Lucy pointed out, remembering the story that her aunt had brought up at the late viscount’s funeral. “Don’t you recall my Aunt Joan’s story from the funeral? Your father hid a ring for your mother.”

He nodded slowly, with his brows furrowed. “It certainly is possible,” he replied. “Though I couldn’t say what it could be that he’d hidden there.”

“Curious.” Lucy was eager to find out, but it seemed that she would need to wait.

“Indeed.”

They spoke for a few moments more, arranging to see each other soon, then he left. Just like with Dinah, Lucy stood on the front step, watching as the carriage bearing Silas pulled away from the curb, then disappeared at the corner.

Lucy closed the front door, turning the key in the lock. She was utterly content, she realized. She was falling in love, and the world felt so full of possibilities.
