“I’m sorry to hear it.” Silas wondered what he could do for his brother, to help him. Michael was always there, doing whatever he could in order to help Silas run the Thornbridge estate and all of its holdings.

“I’m only a second son,” Michael pointed out, shrugging helplessly. “I shall hold no title of my own. I shall inherit no land, and I shall have to work for what I have all of my life.”

Silas felt for his brother—Michael always helped with the family’s business interests. He did the lion’s share of the work.

“But you should be wed happily.” Silas wanted his brother to be happy. Michael deserved the title and all that came with it. It was merely his bad luck to have been born second.

“Perhaps. If I can find a lady who can be content with what I earn.”

Michael turned and left. Silas considered his brother, who always thought the best of others and always helped whenever he could. He hoped, for Michael’s sake, that Percy wasn’t trying to abuse his Christian charity.

Silas had the worst feeling of utter certainty that he was.
