Chapter 41
“Come, Lucy. We must go to the dressmaker’s,” Aunt Joan announced. It was a week until the party. Lucy had just begun to set out her paints so she could get to work.
“I’ll just wear my green muslin,” she said. After all, Silas had said that she needed to learn how to arrange things for herself. She needed to be confident, and part of that came from being comfortable.
“I want to buy you this new dress,” Aunt Joan insisted. “You must look the part of the future viscountess. Then, perhaps, you’ll start to feel the part. You need to learn how to make the game play by your rules. You’re going to be a lady, which means that you’ll have the power to.”
“Thank you, Aunt Joan.” Lucy held her aunt’s hand. “That is, truly masterful advice.”
“Come. Step one is making you look like a lady. Step two, is you believing it.” Aunt Joan nodded to herself.
Lucy, after her talk with Silas at dinner the other night, was feeling much more confident about stepping into the shoes of viscountess. It was going to be an adjustment, but she would be surrounded by people who loved and supported her, no matter what she wanted to do and how she wanted to accomplish it.
She loved Silas, with all her heart. Whatever other arrangements had to be made so that they were both happy would be made, as necessary. Aunt Joan was smiling at her expectantly.
“Very well,” Lucy said. “Though the funds for it shall come out of my money.” She didn’t want her aunt to spend her meagre funds. Aunt Joan already did too much. She would need them, after Lucy got married.
They went to the dress shop, where Lucy was measured and then shown beautiful bolts of cloth. She and Aunt Joan chose a spectacular yellow silk for Lucy to wear to the party. She was reminded of the dress that Lady Baldwin had worn the previous summer. Lucy had admired it. Now, she would have one of her own.
Afterward, Lucy did feel better. She was going to have to adjust—to make the game play by her rules. She was certainly more excited about the party.
