“But if you don’t,” Susan pointed out, “then you might be sacrificing the love of your life. If you don’t at least listen to his explanation, you might regret it forever.”

“Don’t you recall what happened with Edward Russ? It’s the same thing happening all over again, except worse this time, because I really thought that Silas actually loved me.”

Susan smiled at her. “I think that you need to talk with Lord Thornbridge,” she said, “before coming to that conclusion. Edward was only out for money. It sounds to me like Lord Thornbridge began fulfilling a bet and then surprised himself by falling head over heels in love with you.”

Lucy sighed. She didn’t know if that made her feel better. She would have liked to believe it to be true. However, she didn’t know. And she was too hurt to be inclined to find out.

“At least think about it,” Susan insisted.

“I will,” Lucy assured her. She didn’t want to have any regrets. Her anger at Silas was hot, searing. She was tired of hurting. Lucy wished that she had protected herself better. She wished she could have seen Silas for who he truly was.

But she hadn’t. She only really had herself to be angry with. The one person who she couldn’t escape.
