Page 40 of Finding Beau

Closing time neared, and I’d not seen Bernie all evening. After cashing up the register, I made the short journey down to his door, knowing full well he was in there. I could hear him talking on the phone.

A quick ‘come in’ as I knocked, and I walked in, my heart in my mouth, not knowing what was going to happen. I’d avoided this for almost a week, but there was no getting away with it now.

“I’ll call you back. Something’s just come up.” Bernie never took his eyes off me as he ended the call.

“Close the door, Beau.” Shaking my head, I placed the drawer on his desk, backing out of the room. He lunged for me, but I danced out of reach, his hand just skimming my wrist. Who knew he was so agile? He struck again, this time grabbing hold of my shirt, dragging me towards him, his other hand reaching for my throat.

“You’re going nowhere tonight. I’ve had enough of you and your games. Now get on your knees.” He spoke through gritted teeth, his hand digging into my shoulder.

“Just let him go, you piece of shit.”

Bernie threw me to the floor and turned to face the person in the doorway at the same time I did.

What the hell was he doing here?
