“She’s in the hospital, a head injury. She took a nasty beating, but she’ll pull through.” His tone was very matter-of-fact, but I wasn’t convinced. I could see something else on his face. There was more to what he was saying.

“We wanted to ask you some questions. Are you up to it?” He took his notebook out of his pocket and waited.

Was I? Kwan sat next to me, his soothing hands moving steadily up and down my back.

“Can I see her?” I really needed to see for myself she was okay.

“You can, but I do have to tell you she’s currently under arrest. I can take you, but questions first, sir, if you don’t mind.”

I nodded, feeling completely numb. This was just unbelievable.

“I’ll get you some water.” I felt more than saw Kwan get up and return, handing me the drink. I was unable to hold it. My hands were trembling so much. He put it to my lips, tilting it so I could sip the cool liquid.

“Take it steady, Beau. It’s been a shock for you.” He looked at me, a sympathetic look on his face. I mouthed a thank you and turned back to the policeman as he spoke again while Kwan continued to comfort me.

“So, can you tell me a little about your sister? We got your information from her phone but were hoping you could fill in some details for us, like where she’s been staying? What, if anything, do you know of her current circumstances?”

“She was living here until about a month ago, but we argued.” I looked down at my hands in my lap. I felt awful now about throwing her out. If only I hadn’t done that. This was all my fucking fault again. Some brother I was. Everything that had gone wrong in her life was because of me, and now I felt anger building. Not at her, but me.

“I told her to leave. I don’t know where she’s been staying. I think with Kevin?”

“Do you have a last name for this Kevin?” He paused, waiting for my answer.

I shook my head. “No, I don’t. I know he deals in drugs. He’s probably Megan’s pimp too. I don’t have a name, though, sorry.”

“Ah, I think we’re aware of the gentleman.” He wrote in his notebook before speaking again. “And you have no idea where she’s been or where she is now?”

“I, erm, I, no, I don’t. I’m sorry. I’m just a little shaken up. Did you say I could see her? I need to see her.”

“I’ll see what I can do. Is there anything else you can tell us, Mr Pierce?”

“Not really. I haven’t seen her for a month. I know she’s been doing drugs. I don’t know if she’s been dealing. I suspect she’s been selling herself and that Kevin is her pimp. Is that enough?” I asked. “Do you want me to grass up my sister anymore? Because it feels like that’s what you’re asking me to do. I want to see her. You have to tell me where she is.”
